If you enjoy being creative and exploring different materials and techniques then this is the course for you! All abilities are welcome on this course.
Studying Art & Design develops deep thinking skills as well as enriching personal development in terms of skill, understanding and appreciation of culture.
Art & Design complements the more academic subjects as it can help students focus and express their ideas creativity in a wide variety of ways.
Art & Design is a highly regarded and useful subject that can lead to many creative careers, but also enhances a learner’s aptitude for whatever career path they choose.
What qualifications will I get at the end of the course?
1 GCSE A* – G.
What can this qualification lead to afterwards?
You would be well equipped to go on and study ‘A’ level or Level 3 BTEC in Art & Design or any other creative subject such as Graphics, Fashion, Design, Multi-Media, ICT, Photography, Textiles etc.
What topics will I study on this course?
In year 10 you will research, explore and develop work on the following themes:
- Still Life
- Landscape
- Face & Figure
You will experience and explore a wide range of materials and working methods; these will include drawing, painting, printmaking, textile based Art, photography, mixed-media…
In year 11 you will work on another project before completing a Mock externally set task. From January you will be set your real externally set task. You will exhibit work in the summer term.
Do I have to do any coursework?
60% of your overall mark is assessed on your portfolio of work (this includes any class work, homework and independent work you produce).
How much homework will I have to do?
In Year 10 you will be issued with approximately one piece of homework per week and are expected to spend at least one and a half hours completing it. In year 11 you will be expected to work independently on preparation work for your mock and real externally set task, you will also receive any other appropriate homework to complete.
How will I be assessed on this course?
Portfolio of work
Controlled assessment. 60% of the total marks. Marked out of 80
The portfolio will be selected from work undertaken during the course of study and must include more than one project.
A response to all 4 assessment objectives is required in the portfolio as a whole.
Work presented is marked by the centre and moderated by AQA.
Externally-set task
External assessment. 40% of the total marks. Marked out of 80
10 hours of sustained focused study
Students respond to their chosen starting point.
Question papers can be issued to students from 1 January in the year of the exam.
Unlimited preparation time and 10 hours of supervised time.
A response to all 4 assessment objectives is required.
Work presented is marked by the centre and moderated by AQA.
